This is addressed to those who consider themselves critics.

If you're a "blunt," insulting ass to someone and you bitch about them giving you a bitchy response, then I have an easy solution for you! Simply stop giving rudely blunt comments. That way, you don't have to feel annoyed by getting a bitchy response back, because you won't warrant yourself one.

If you're a "blunt," insulting ass to someone and could care less how bitchy they are in response, I sarcastically congratulate you on being proud of being an ass to someone you don't even know. Have fun pissing people off, causing drama, and not giving a shit until you cross the line and get reported for abuse. (Because, whadd'ya know!, you can get reported for completely insulting and demeaning someone on deviantART in an abusive manner).

People need to get it through their heads already that the method in which they critique will affect their percentage of negative versus positive responses. It's simple logic.

:pointr: If you're going to be an ass, you'll predictably get more negative responses, no matter how "right" you are. Insults insult people. They're meant to incite a negative reaction. Duh

:pointr: If you're going to be blunt but reasonable, you'll predictably get more of mix of responses. You're not sugar-coating your words, but you're not insulting them and their work either. The response will depend on the maturity of the person you've critiqued. And you can adjust your prediction based on fandom/community age range, how the person you're critiquing reacts towards others, etc.

:pointr: If you're going to be constructive, reasonable, and avoid using insults and demeaning words, you'll predictably get more positive responses. It's not about kissing ass, it's about treating them like they're not a fucking idiot but instead a human being who is still growing like everyone else. People have a tendency to respond better to critique when you both point out errors/inconsistencies and point out good qualities/areas. (Pssst. That's what we call constructive criticism! Gasp!).

Human behavior doesn't have to be rocket science.

Of course there will always be outliers (unpredicted/irrational responses), but outliers aren't what you should base your critique response success rate on (I'm looking at you, insult-prone critics). In the end, it's about the majority, because that's what you'll get the most, regardless of outliers. The higher your success rate (good responses), the more people you will have helped grow. And the less you'll have to complain about how "people just can't take critique these days!!" Simple, no?

:star: Oh, and (God forbid!) it never hurts to ask beforehand if someone would like a critique. Not everyone is posting their work for critique, nor is everyone trying to fit certain standards. Some people are here primarily for fun, not professionally or seriously. Let those happy cinnamon rolls who aren't hurting anyone enjoy themselves, yeh?

Seriously, I can't help but laugh when certain "critics" bitch about how their critiques, which consist of insults and demeaning words, are responded to with anger or a refusal to accept or consider. Like, what else did you expect? Who cares if you're "right"? You just treated that person like shit. Of course people are gonna get pissy with you. It's predictable human behavior.

Just because you have "thick skin" and don't mind being insulted doesn't mean everyone does; and quite frankly, it's not always a matter of "thick skin." I personally refuse to take seriously "critiques" that resort to nothing but petty insults - because in my opinion, someone who resorts to insults rather than mature reason and logic isn't there to "help" but instead to demean and cause drama. Why else would they feel the need to immaturely insult my work rather than have a conversation with me on how I could improve?
