Yaoi vs Shounen-Ai by ChikitaWolf Yaoi vs Shounen-Ai by ChikitaWolf
Stamp by ~ChikitaWolf

I really don't know about the look of it (the stamp). I wanted to emphasis separation between the two.. but you know me and small stamps, lol. I suck at them... It looks odd to me, but oh well

ANYWAY! Request by ~sailorstar165

Definition time~! :dummy:

.:SHOUNEN-AI:.

"Shōnen-ai originally connoted ephebophilia or pederasty in Japan, but from the early 1970s to the late 1980s, was used to describe a new genre of shōjo manga, primarily by the Year 24 Group, about beautiful boys in love. Characteristics of shōnen-ai include that they were exotic, often taking place in Europe, and idealistic. Suzuki describes shōnen-ai as being "pedantic" and "difficult to understand", saying that they required "knowledge of classic literature, history and science" and were replete with "philosophical and abstract musings". She says that this challenged the young readers and expanded their minds. Although they could not understand the works at first reading, as they grew older they would come to understand the works more. In the meantime, "the readers' attention became focused on the figure of the male protagonist" and how he navigated his sexual relationships. By the late 1980s, the popularity of professionally published shōnen-ai was declining, and yaoi dōjinshi was becoming more popular. In recent years, the terms yaoi and shōnen-ai have sometimes been used by western fans to differentiate between the contents of the genre."

.:YAOI:.

"Although different meanings are often ascribed to the terms yaoi and Boy's Love (with yaoi generally said to be more explicit...), there is conflicting information on their usage.

Yaoi is an acronym created in the dōjinshi market of the late 1970s by Yasuko Sakata and Akiko Hatsu and popularized in the 1980s standing for Yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi (ヤマなし、オチなし、意味なし?) "No climax, no point, no meaning". This phrase was first used as a "euphemism for the content" and refers to how yaoi, as opposed to the "difficult to understand" shōnen-ai of the Year 24 Group, focused on "the yummy parts". The phrase also parodies a classical style of plot structure. Kubota Mitsuyoshi says that Osamu Tezuka used yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi to dismiss poor quality manga, and this was appropriated by the early yaoi authors. As of 1998, the term yaoi was considered "common knowledge to manga fans". A joking alternative acronym among fujoshi (female yaoi fans) for yaoi is Yamete, oshiri ga itai (やめて お尻が 痛い?, "Stop, my ass hurts!")
.

o.O" No kidding.

And, okay, for those who didn't read all that-- they kindly summed it up at the end :meow:

.:SUMMARY OF DIFFERENCE:.
Yaoi has been used to describe titles that contain largely sex scenes and other sexually explicit themes; and shōnen-ai is used to describe titles that focus more on romance and do not include explicit sexual content, although they may include implicit sexual content.

And there we go :D

I like shounen-ai more. It's not as stereotypical as yaoi. Nowadays, ephboephilia is seen more in yaoi than in shounen-ai.

Thank you for making this stamp! I've read a few 'yaoi' stories that turned out to be shonen-ai stories. The truly sad thing is we can make many of these stamps, but there will always be fans that can't tell the difference.

Yaoi is PWP.
Shounen-ai is pederasty or a 70s/80s manga movement.
BL is completely clean love with maybe implicit content.
Bara is a catch-all term for male/male, similar to yuri for female/female. Roses often represent male homosexuality while lilies represent female homosexuality. e.g. in Ouran High School Host Club, the Host Club are surrounded by roses and the Zuka Club is surrounded by lilies.

First BL - In the Summer Room
First Yaoi - Kaze to Ki no Uta

Aha! Yes! xD I hate how people think that they're the same thing. Yaoi is porn and shounen ai is fluff. Thank you for making this =3

When I first got into the fandom I was so confused if yaoi and shounen ai were the same or not because some people told me, it was the same and some told me it wasn't XD Now I know there is a difference more. I think of shounen ai as a softer more romantic version of yaoi then just about the sex.

Yaoi = gay porn

However, today, many younger fangirls (who don't quite understand the difference between porn and fluff) have started calling anything boy x boy "yaoi." This is incorrect though. If there's a picture of two guys holding hands, that ain't porn, lmao. It's shounen-ai.

Yeah lately many people has started to call shounen-ai yaoi, and that confuses me a lot. Since i prefer shounen-ai Before yaoi.
I'm a fan of thiefshipping (marikXbakura), but i prefer shounen-ai versions of the shipping, i'm not a big fan of the yaoi version.
The same goes for the other shippings i like.

So if two guys in a picture (manga/anime) are hugging each other, kissing, holding hands and so on that's shounen-ai (fluff)

And if the two guys in the Picture are doing something "awkward" then it's yaoi? (gay porn)

Am i right?

Pidän Shounen Aista enemmän.

Thanks so much for making this stamp! There is a huge difference with the terms.

For example, I like (a little) Shounen-ai because it is cute and romantic. Reminds me of how real gay relationships work ^^ But yaoi is way too explicit and unrealistic for my taste. Honestly, I think it is a horrible stereotype for gays...but whatever :)

The only thing I do not understand is why on Shounen ai style books with a good plot and no sexual content have "yaoi manga" on the book by the company. This is a genuine question, sorry for the ignorance....

I only started reading it today and I like it! Only mild stuff though :3

Ah, that's because it's slowly being only catergorized into "yaoi". "Shounen-ai" has slowly been disappearing OTL. They're just going to start calling it "yaoi" (at least from what I've heard).

Personally, I don't mind soft shounen-ai, but it appears as if they're just going to move with yaoi at the rate things are going.

I do know the difference between shounan-ai and yaoi but it's easier to type "yaoi" so I just use that. lol (Truthfully, I refer to shounan-ai as "mild yaoi" which, to me, includes kissing and hugging but nothing more than that).

Shotacon: 1. An overaged nan or woman with sexual desires towards young boys
2. A genre of anime and manga that shows overaged men or women (most commonly men) having sexually explict relationships with young boys (ex: Boku no Pico)

It's hard to say anything in regards to "yaoi" these days :< I keep telling people that while I don't like yaoi, I don't mind a soft shounen-ai (where I can stupidly mistake it as brotherly)... and then they link me to yaoi >3> I'm like: :nuu:

Exactly. I'm very particular about the yaoi/shonen-ai argument because yaoi fans get such a bad name nowadays, and shonen-ai is usually just tossed in with yaoi. I like fluffy shonen-ai; i.e. hugging, innocent kissing, holding hands. What people don't realize is that there's a huge difference in the themes of the two, and I often get dissed as a stupid yaoi fangirl.

Welcome!

So true! :noes: My BFF in real life is a yaoi fan, and I hate how people will start bashing her because of it :/ I mean, just because you don't like something someone else does, doesn't mean you should bash it >3> And you're most definately right, "shounen-ai" usually isn't even mentioned anymore. It's just "yaoi" and "yaoi" :C Glad some people know the difference!

I totally agree. Yaoi is for certain tastes; some people love it, some people hate it, some people are indifferent. There's no reason to bash something someone else likes, and it's especially rude to bash the person.

I hope that eventually people will learn the difference and we shonen-ai fans won't be grouped with the yaoi fans. It gets tiresome, doesn't it?
