Okay, so a while back, I ended up looking at someone's first attempt at drawing (it was their OC). They asked for critiques as to how they could improve and such, so I scrolled down to the comments and was about to do just that when I saw this:

"This is a piece of anime shit. Get another style or suck forever."

The person replied rather angry (quite understandably really), and this was the response:

"Take a chill pill. I gave you a critique just like you asked. If you don't want critiques, don't ask for them."



Calling someone's artwork "a piece of anime shit"... and saying that's a critique...?

Let us now look at the definition of critique

cri·tique /kriˈtēk/
Noun: A detailed analysis and assessment of something.

That was no critique, lmao. I don't know how one could even think that could be called a critique.

A critique is just as defined above-- it points out what a person did well on and what they may need to improve, as well as maybe some tips and pointers to help them out.

I'm sure a lot of you out there could give a better definition, but, well, that's how I like to explain it

Now, I'm not saying critiques must be all sympathetic and goody-goody-two-shoes suck up to the person. Some people critique with cold-hard opinion and whatnot, but calling someone's artwork "shit" without even a proper analysis of the artwork itself is in no way a critique.

Anyway, as I like to say:

"If you're going to critique, make it constructive. You're trying to point out what the person did right and what they can improve on, not tear them down and stomp on them till they give up on art altogether "
