That is no critique -.- by ChikitaWolf That is no critique -.- by ChikitaWolf
Stamp by ~ChikitaWolf
Allen Walker (c) Hoshino Katsura
Background.. from here

Rant stamp, anyone~?
Another big stamp 8D -brick'd-

Okay, so a while back, I ended up looking at someone's first attempt at drawing (it was their OC). They asked for critiques as to how they could improve and such, so I scrolled down to the comments and was about to do just that when I saw this:

"This is a piece of anime shit. Get another style or suck forever."

The person replied rather angry (quite understandably really), and this was the response:

"Take a chill pill. I gave you a critique just like you asked. If you don't want critiques, don't ask for them."

:iconwhutplz:

Calling someone's artwork "a piece of anime shit"... and saying that's a critique...?

Let us now look at the definition of critique :dummy:

cri·tique /kriˈtēk/
Noun: A detailed analysis and assessment of something.

That was no critique, lmao. I don't know how one could even think that could be called a critique.

A critique is just as defined above-- it points out what a person did well on and what they may need to improve, as well as maybe some tips and pointers to help them out.

I'm sure a lot of you out there could give a better definition, but, well, that's how I like to explain it :D

Now, I'm not saying critiques must be all sympathetic and goody-goody-two-shoes suck up to the person. Some people critique with cold-hard opinion and whatnot, but calling someone's artwork "shit" without even a proper analysis of the artwork itself is in no way a critique.

Anyway, as I like to say:

"If you're going to critique, make it constructive. You're trying to point out what the person did right and what they can improve on, not tear them down and stomp on them till they give up on art altogether :P"

Wellz, that's my two cents~! :iconlawooplz:

The dude up there in the stamp is Allen Walker from D.Gray-Man. I can't help but add him in my stamps cuz he has the most awesome facial expressions xP And what d'ya know, someone caught onto the irony x'D Yes, Allen sucks at art :B

Art is a skill; practice leads to more experience at a skill, so naturally practice will be a determining factor in art improvement.
Words (critique or false critique) are simply a motivator or demotivator - they'll affect your want to create art, not determine whether you're art is good or not.

suppose the demotivation kinda sifts through everyone potential. ive had work destroyed by teachers and masters alike and i keep going. its honestly more along the lines of growing a pair and moving on.

If we treated it like natural selection, we'd lose quite a lot of prospective talented artists. There are plenty of people with anxiety, depression, or other struggles that make them more likely to be crushed by destructive criticism. There's also the matter of destroying potential at an early age via telling a child that their art is shit and causing them to give it up; in fact, many Mary Sue blogs on Tumblr won't critique MLP OCs due to the age range of the creators making them because of this.

kinda have to treat it like natural selection... not everyone is special in any regard and not everyone can become an artist. But i do agree that stomping out creativity at a young age is wrong, but criticism should start to become more and more important as they get older and more serious about art. but if you decide to just give up after some guy on the internet tells you that you suck, you aren't a real artist. personally i think destructive criticism helps the most, im an apprentice and when ever i make bad work, he sometimes destroyed it and tells me to start over if i did really poor.

Eh, I prefer not to treat it like natural selection xD I believe anyone can become an artist and should be given the chance if they practice hard enough and are given the right direction or "push." I think it's really sad when someone gives up something that could've made them happy if they'd simply been encouraged and eased into blunt criticism so they can grow that "thick skin." Of course, if they're simply not willing to improve and expect everything handed to them on a silver platter, they've only screwed themselves and it's not wonder they'll want to quit.

It's definitely true, though, that while some will improve better with constructive criticism, others find deconstructive the best for themselves (like yourself). I personally am still growing my self-confidence when it comes to having my work destroyed by someone who gives a legitimate blunt critique/feedback and picking myself back up afterwards, so I lean more towards constructive criticism. I suppose my depression also has a part in that as well, though.

Yeah, a straight up insult like that is not a critique. It's supposed to be an evaluation of your work, or detailed review. Even if they don't like your art, they don't even have to look at it

really? i can be harsh but i wouldn't even consider something like that. saying someone's lineart is sloppy is at least telling them what they should improve. and they shouldn't even be looking at stuff from an art style they so obviously hate. because that's unproductive and probably quite boring.

Honestly, guys like that seriously piss me off, and to think that it was that persons first try, even IF someone was a cold-hearted critique, even then it would be common sense to have atleast one sentence to encourage him/her! This guy doesn't need to work on his sense of critique, he needs to work on common sense! And I REALLY hope that he reads this!

Ugh, this just happened to me today. I'm so glad that you made this stamp. It makes me feel a lot better. Someone just posted a comment saying "you suck" and nothing else on one of my pictures. That doesn't tell me anything helpful at all! I don't even know what they didn't like! What bugs me even more is that the person who said it doesn't seem to have any deviations of their own--and I really don't think people should judge someone for a skill that they don't even have. *sigh*

Plus, even if my art does suck--they should know that simply telling me that it's sucky isn't going to fix it. Tell me how to fix it. And if they don't know how--they SHOUDN'T SAY ANYTHING. I've seen tons of garbagey art in my life and I just laugh to myself and DON'T LOOK AT IT any longer than I want to. Even if its part of a trend that I find really appalling, I might rant about it in general in my journal, or talk to somone in RL about it, but I don't hand out insults to people or their art because that's not what an art community is about. An art comminity is about artists coming together to appreciate art and help each other gain skills. Constructive critisism is awesome, but empty insults just hurt my feelings.

I apologize for the angry rant, I just needed to get that out of my system.

you say
"don't be a whiney bitch just because someone critiqued your work"

I say:
they wouldn't be whiney if you wasn't so god damn insensitive to their piece.

you say:
giving critiques is to help them imrpove I can't be all huggy and love-dovey

I say:
did I tell you to give them a freakin hug?! and you can help them improve WITHOUT being a dick and making them feel degraded and lowering their self esteem and their confidence. Before giving a critique think about what you are gonna say otherwise STFU before you make them "moan" or "whine"

Actually, calling it a "piece of shit" is indeed a critique, just not a constructive, helpful one. Just saying. Because every comment on someone's artwork (unless it's off topic) is a critique, unless the artist him/herself posted the comment (perhaps as a response?)

I don't remember if I've commented on this stamp or not, so pardon me if I have and am repeating myselfXD But I agree totally with this. There is a HUGE difference between giving someone a critique, a CONSTRUCTIVE criticism..or just plain being an ass about it. Personally, I never asked for any of those and don't want them because I already know what I need to work on and don't necessarily need them pointed out. I'm always drawing and am always trying to improve. We all start somewhere, some lower than others. So to have someone come along and say 'this sucks, it's crappy, stop drawing' doesn't help at all. And yes, I think in most cases like that the person is just a troll anyway trying to get attention. I've learned it's just best to ignore such comments, because for every one of those negative comments there are at least half a dozen positive ones. Why waste time grieving over one thing some random person said when there are the positive comments that actually make you feel good about your art and help you improve? So yes, this stamp is made of win=D Long comment is long sorry about my ramblingXD
