Kanda Yuu was not an affectionate man. He had about as much touchie-feeliness as an angry grizzly bear. Fearlessly blunt, abrasive at times, respectful when he needed to be, and strictly disciplined. A wall to be broken down.

Or perhaps, to be climbed?

Exorcist, first and foremost. Created for this very purpose in the Holy War. There was nothing else - nothing else but for the shadow of a woman to tickle his faded, hacked up memory. A foreign (or was it?) desire buried deep within him to follow, one he could not rationalize.

It was not a want, it was a need. An unquenchable thirst to find this mystery woman before the last lotus petal fell.

But would he ever find her? Kanda was no optimist. He was a realist.

That didn't stop the painful emptiness in his dusty heart.

A past life's string of Fate held taut, its direction encased in impenetrable shadow.

* * *

There was a new recruit. Another idiot, as far Kanda was concerned.

The foolish woman now undergoing initiation had previously been living in the town his latest mission had been located at. After he had completed his purpose there, destroying all traces of Akuma, she had had the gall to follow him, insisting that he pay for the destruction of her stupid little fruit stall--

("It was a flower stall, baka!")

Something about it being his fault that it got squashed underfoot by a stray Level Two--

("You weren't even trying to protect it!")

Che.

Well, in his decision to ignore her insistent presence at his back, Kanda had not expected her to be silly enough to follow him all the way to the bloody Order. As if it were Fate's mission to scorn him further, a touch from Hevlaska to test compatibility reveals the crazy woman is already an Accomodator. Glassy blue blades burst from the tops of her hands, and a black and silver uniform is thrust into her thin arms.

Under normal circumstances, the initiation would have been bearable for Kanda - he'd just continue to ignore her like he had originally. Unfortunately for him, the world is small, and the Black Order smaller.

A day later, they're on a mission together. Her upbringing makes her strong-minded, but her care makes her weak. And beneath the heavy silver of the Rose Cross, a heart like hers will surely crumble.

Or so he thought.

* * *

Time continues its flow, missions come and go, and there she sits across from him on yet another train. Her hair is longer, her eyes a little sharper, but otherwise she has remained the same.

* * *

A single Finder lay in a twisted and torn up heap before them, his pentacle-graced murderer grinning gleefully at its sinful handiwork.

Chocolate eyes were no longer gentle. Those soft orbs that normally skipped with laughter and rolled secret smirks his way were now inflamed with emotion, unadulterated fury glowing like lit coals in their depths.

This passion was something Kanda could not relate to.

Finders died every day, dropping like flies mission after mission. What purpose was there in losing oneself to anger over such a thing?

This was war. Sacrifices were inevitably to be made.

And yet here this young woman stood before the Earl's disgusting, blood-covered creation, her Innocence flaring in response to her ire and power pulsing in waves from her figure. The greedy tongues of flame reaching out from Hell's maw to surround them were no competition against her chilling glow of ethereal blue light. It danced blindingly along her bare arms when the Akuma dared to approach her, focusing on the tops of her hands and stretching out into two deadly blades, humming with holy power.

The Akuma laughed at her display.

She was not laughing.

A stray wind from the chaos caught her long curtain of dark brown hair. Silken strands separated with the gust, revealing an expression that promised destruction and vengeance, illuminated by ice and fire.

Kanda couldn't deny it, for at that moment his attention was caught.

And then the abomination struck--

It didn't stand a chance.

* * *

It was different after that.

Butterfly touches, a mere whisper of skin against skin as they walked side by side. Flashed glances, coffee brown meeting navy blue. A rosy tint blooming on cheeks - and then gone just as quickly, chased away by a curt word, a passing insult.

In love there is war, in war there is love. And it was blooming right under Central's stuck-up nose.

"Do you still see the flowers, Kanda?"

An experimental writing piece I did back in October 2014, after Reisy told me how her DGM OC Rei and Kanda first met and how their relationship began to bloom. Her ship has a lot of fun thematic imagery, so it was perfect for the type of experimental writing I wanted to try at the time.

The drabble itself is more or less from Kanda's detached perspective; and yes, Alma is alluded to because Alma is an important bab and I love how Reisy keeps him/her in mind with her Kanda ship. Something to note though is that the character Rei has evolved in the past two years, so a few background details may have changed since I wrote this.

I'm pretty proud of it for a dusty two year-old piece, though, and Reisy liked it; so I hope y'all enjoy it too (even if it may not be your ship) :iconpapcryplz:

Gift: Kanda x Rei One-shot.: For You, I Will Wait Forever :.
a Kanda x Rei one-shot
A wilting candle's flame flickered weakly in the darkness, its faint glow lighting up a portion of a particularly cold room within the Order. Shiroyama Rei sat quietly by the window of this room, her head resting upon her hand as she gazed out at the morose rain and wind-filled world outside. A soft sigh left her lips, and her brown eyes went half-lidded as sleep tugged gently at her body. She felt so heavy... so tired...
He was leaving again. Yet another mission. But that was natural for them, being exorcists.
"I'll be back in a few days."
A few days? Hadn't he been on a mission just yesterday?
Worry for his wellbeing gripped her, and the young woman couldn't help but voice her concerns.
"But Kanda-"
Rei froze as the tall Japanese man leaned down, long, dark blue hair flowing out and tickling her cheeks as a gentle, almost barely felt kiss was placed upon her forehead.
"Baka, don't give me that look," a soft whisp
[DGM one-shot] The Shadows That Chase HimWriting experiment. Allen-centric. Inspired by a reviewer on my DGM OC fanfiction SOTF who said they'd be interested in seeing in-depth writing on the inner emotions of the D.Gray-Man canon characters when they experience pain and struggles - things that the manga can only imply through visual representation and dialogue.
- -|- The Shadows That Chase Him -|- -
Pain was not unique to Allen Walker.
As morbid as the Destroyer of Time admitted it could sound, the feeling of his own torn flesh, bruised muscle, and fractured bones was more familiar to him than any friendship he had managed to grow in his past months (or was it a year now?) at the Black Order. Truly, ever since he had been conscious of it, Pain had been an ever-constant, fickle companion in all of its many, diverse forms; an unfailing shadow at his back even in his loneliest of hours.
To put it in perspective, Allen's first recollection of Pain's companionship occurred before he had been "Allen." It was
